Those are actually called carpenter bees and they burrow into dead wood to lay eggs. Jac n Ran have some come every year to lay eggs in a their firewood.
Good to know the real name, thanks. FUnny name, carpenter bees that “work” with wood. I bet it came from the Barranca right behind our house- lots of wood there. This one bee was so loud, I can’t even imagine how loud a whole swarm would be.
