news on Napolean Dynomite

In recent weeks I have heard two people refer to Napolean Dynamite as having autism. These were moms both referring to their own children as having “the same type of autism as Napolean Dynamite” and one mom said that he had aspergers! I laughed out loud both times. The character ND has autism?  While in school for many, many years, eventually getting my CA teaching credential I did A LOT of research, discussions and learning about learning dissabilities- and autism was at the top of the list. I would have never placed ND in this category- but I am no doctor.

Since two separate people made this reference I thought I should check it out. So, I did!

* The first link was movie review. This guy said that it is obvious that ND has asperger’s and compared him to Rain Man! Rain Man had zero social skills (could not relate to other people), had problems communicating what her wanted and he was very factual- no imagination, could not understand humor… and he had one subject that he was a “genius” in. The prime example of a person with aspergers.

* The next few articles were written  by psychiatrists and printed in medical journals- I would take these a bit more seriously than a movie review. They confirmed my belief that ND was just socially awkward, weird, quirky, unusual, eccentric, strange, kooky, odd, peculiar, strange… whatever adjective you want to put in there! He was a TEENAGER. I have known a few ND in my time… some you reading this…

To the lady who told me her son has aspergers, the kind ND has- news for ya- your kid is just weird! Embrace it!

birthing

I watched a show on Discovery about different birthing plans… these people are nuts!

* One lady from England flew to Isreal so that she could give birth in the water with dolphins! The dolphins were behind plexy glass but they “felt” her pain. When she had a contraction the dolphins squeaked back at her!

* Another lady, lived a natury (granola) life. They lived in a forest and he was a nature cinematographer. So, they wanted  to give birth outside with the owls! They named the boy Coyote!

LOOK!

Two weeks ago Avery got a few “Wild Animal Baby” books- actually a magazine you can subscribe to. She has 9 books and has been carrying them around with her ever since. Everywhere- she goes to the bathroom, goes to grandma’s, in and out of the car, the park and she even insists on holding them when she goes to bed! We read the books a few times a day…

Today we went to the SB zoo and she of coarse took the “baby books” with her. When we got to the flamingos, otters and ant eater she showed them the books about them! It was hilarious.

Today I had to make chocolate chip cookies and a cake. Avery wanted to help. She was a pretty good helper.

Then we got to enjoy the warm, ooey, gooey cookies- YUM!

you don’t fit

Avery and I went to Ojai for the morning with Lisa & Quinn. We went to pick up Nathan for lunch… he didn’t fit in the car! Poor Nathan had to walk…

PS Avery was not sick, she just gets very over heated. Good thing we don’t live in Ojai…

We finally put together Avery’s kitchen. We got it for her for her b-day, over 3 months ago! She has been “cooking” mac and cheese, chocolate chip cookies and cheese burgers… so yummy.

no

I feel like I am saying ‘no’ all day long! Don’t touch this or that, no snack, don’t get more toys out… I swear, it never ends till she is in bed.

I read an article by Barbara Coloroso where she suggests that instead of saying no so much, we (parents) should respond with;

* Yes, later (yes, you can have the cookie after dinner)

* Convince me- instead of saying no way you can borrow the car keys… convince me!

* You can use “NO” when is come to safety issues- running in the street or playing with the light socket.

Of coarse, there are parents who have hard time saying no to their kids too. They give in to begging and pleading- wouldn’t want to hurt their self esteem!!
