I got a call from the drug company that makes the narcolepsy medication. It’s the only company that makes this drug in the US. They have been in contact with my insurance company. The story is…
My insurance has a $500 deductible for prescriptions. After I hit that $500 then they will pay only half of any prescription I need. The drugs are $3000+ a month, so I will hit the $500 in one filled prescription. So, my part of the monthly bill would be $1736. Good news is that they have a coupon I can use to get $1200 off- that’s $500+ a month! That’s just not going to happen.
I feel so defeated. I cried for two days. I am so sad, mad and overall pissed off. I’ve been in bondage with this crappy narcolepsy for 15+ years. I finally felt there might be a means to an end- a normal life. But alas, NO, that won’t be happening anytime soon.
For those that are against “Obama Care,” this is only one of thousands upon thousands of stories where a person is not able to live life to their fullest. This not only effects my life, but my family too. Yes, I am able to live somewhat comfortably, but not a “full life.” Not sure what will happen next. I’ve only been taking half the prescribed dose of the new medication, so I have 4 more weeks left. Then what?
To make matters worse, I found out that my health insurance won’t be paying for the two appointments I’ve had with the doctor and only 33% of the night & day sleep study I went through.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
After all this, I won’t even be able to have the medicine to help. Just plain sucks!

I’m so sorry to hear this. The health care system in our country is so messed up and this is one example that really shows it off. There’s no reason for you not to have that medicine. It is ridiculous that it costs so much and on top of that the insurance company won’t pay for the stuff that, by all rights, they should be paying for in the first place? RIDICULOUS
I hope you and Dan figure something out and you’re able to get the medicine you need. We’ll be thinking of you.
You’re right it does suck, and it is a great illustration of how jacked up the insurance and medical system is here.
The cost of the drugs reveals a whole other messed up side of the whole system. It’s undoubtedly because of patents that they cost so much; there’s no way they actually cost that much to produce.
I hope that you guys are able to find some other solution!
@Nick- thanks, appreciated. Yup, it’s a whole jacked up system. Makes me so mad.
@Jared- this is the only lab that makes this drug in the US. That means they can charge whatever they want- no competition. My doctor told me it costs them $7 to make- I have no idea if that’s true or not.
